Why split a PDF?

Splitting a PDF is useful when you need to:

  • Send only part of a large document
  • Separate chapters into individual files
  • Extract a single page for someone who only needs that page
  • Break a large file into smaller, more manageable pieces

Splitting methods

Our Split PDF tool supports several ways to divide your document:

By page ranges

Specify ranges like 1-3, 5, 8-10. Each range becomes a separate output file. This is the most flexible method — you decide exactly which pages go where.

By fixed intervals

Split every N pages. For example, every 2 pages creates a new file. Useful when you have a document with a repeating structure (like double-page spreads).

By selected pages

Pick pages visually from thumbnails. Each selected page can become its own file, or selected pages can be grouped into one file.

Step by step

  1. Go to Split PDF.
  2. Upload your PDF.
  3. Choose your splitting method.
  4. If using ranges, enter them in the format 1-3, 5, 8-10.
  5. Click split. Each range or selection becomes a separate PDF.
  6. Download your files.

Tips

  • Page numbers in ranges refer to the original document's page order, starting at 1.
  • You can split into as many output files as you need.
  • If you only need one section, consider Extract Pages instead — it's simpler for single-section extraction.
  • Need to remove pages rather than split? Use Remove Pages.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Split and Extract? Split creates multiple output files from one PDF. Extract pulls selected pages into a single new file (or individual files). Use Split when you want to divide the whole document; use Extract when you want just a few pages.

Can I split a password-protected PDF? No. Remove the password first using Unlock PDF, then split.

Does splitting reduce quality? No. Splitting copies pages as-is — no re-encoding or quality loss.
